RECIPE: BLACK WIDOW PORTER

If you think the name of this recipe has something to do with its deep, dark color, you are wrong. I like to brew outside, and my brewing system and hoses stay outside three hundred and sixty-five days a year. Every so often, there might be a bug or two that finds its way into a piece of equipment, so I have gotten used to checking for unwanted brewing assistants before I brew. However, over the many times I have brewed this recipe, a very large black widow has escaped detection three times. Usually it pops out a hose and into the boil kettle during sparging. I have to admit, fishing a very upset black widow from hot wort is not my favorite brew-day task. I never seem to have the proper tool at hand, and when the spider is finally fished out, it tends to be missing a few parts. As I later pour myself a pint, I assume the boil killed anything nasty and denatured any toxins, yet I can’t help but taste a bit of spidery goodness in every sip. (Caution: Do not add spiders to your beer.)
